Foundational Themes

Our foundational themes are woven through all elements of the TREC model from the professional development offerings and resiliency programs to the framework and formal accreditation and certification processes.

Equity, Inclusion, & Empowerment

This theme is centered around creating an environment in which all individuals are treated with fairness and respect and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Relationships

Building and maintaining strong, trusted relationships is key to the TREC model. This includes fostering relationships with colleagues, clients, and those we serve, and promoting collaboration and teamwork within the organization.

Love & Compassion

We emphasize the importance of caring for others and treating them with kindness and empathy. It is integral to the TREC model as it helps to create a positive and supportive culture within the organization.

Growth Mindsets & Intrinsic Motivation

We believe that individuals have the ability to grow and improve through effort and lifelong learning.

Mindfulness & Self-Reflection

We encourage individuals to be present in the moment and to regularly reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

TREC Legacy Story

Our journey began in 2012, when a leadership team at an independent high school in San Diego noticed a dramatic increase in students experiencing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Despite the success of our students in graduating from our resource centers or catching up on credits and graduating at their prior schools, many were struggling mentally and emotionally in their post-secondary endeavors. In response, a team of dedicated and compassionate staff used their expertise in social emotional learning, resilience building, mindfulness, and PACEs science to create a series of trainings to help staff, students, and others become not only trauma informed, but trauma resilient.

Over the past decade, our professional development offerings and resiliency programs have spread across the country. We have also developed a full accreditation model with our core trainings, resiliency programs for students and staff, data collection and analysis, partnerships, and an ecosystem of TREC-accredited schools and partners. In addition, we offer certification to individuals in the helping profession as Trauma-Resilient Professionals (TRP).

Any organization can pursue TREC accreditation through a process that includes participation in professional development sessions, professional well-being surveys, the launch of resiliency programs, a needs and strengths assessment, the establishment of a TREC work group, a self-study, and the creation of a sustainability action plan. This process supports helping professionals and those they serve in developing resiliency skills to cope and heal from past and future traumatic events.

We are dedicated to helping individuals and organizations build resilience and create a positive impact in their communities. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Models and Resiliency

TREC integrates aspects of SEL models to cultivate crucial social and emotional skills in individuals, encompassing self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. These skills, vital not only for children but also for adults, are instrumental in fostering resilience, navigating adversity, and nurturing positive relationships.

SEL frameworks emphasize the significance of fostering emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and self-awareness alongside academic development.

Trauma-Informed Models

TREC incorporates trauma-informed principles to establish safe, supportive, and empowering environments for individuals who have experienced trauma. We prioritize understanding the impact of trauma, fostering trusted relationships, and promoting healing and resilience. Additionally, TREC creates cultures of trust and belonging among staff, emphasizing the significance of both self-care and collective care.

Trauma-informed models provide frameworks for sensitively and supportively understanding and responding to individuals affected by trauma, acknowledging its profound and enduring effects on their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. These models strive to create safe, empowering environments conducive to healing.

Restorative Justice Models

TREC integrates restorative justice principles to address harm, conflict, and wrongdoing within educational and community contexts, prioritizing relationship repair, harm healing, accountability, and dialogue among all stakeholders. In our Trauma-Resilient Professional certification, participants acquire skills and practices for implementing talking circles and other restorative justice methods.

Restorative Justice models advocate for a shift from punitive measures to restoration, emphasizing dialogue, empathy, and community engagement.

Socio-Ecological Models

TREC utilizes socio-ecological frameworks, supported by collective impact initiatives, to understand the multifaceted determinants of health encompassing social, economic, and environmental factors. These frameworks recognize that health outcomes are shaped by various levels of influence, from individual behaviors to community contexts, organizational structures, and public policies.

Socio-ecological models provide a lens to comprehend the complex interplay between individuals and their broader social, cultural, economic, and environmental contexts, acknowledging the diverse impacts on human behavior and health outcomes.

Public Health Models

TREC seamlessly incorporates public health approaches to combat population-level health disparities and advance health equity. We educate on and tackle social determinants of health, advocating for policy reforms, and actively participates in community-based interventions to enhance health outcomes across all demographics.
